Stacy Boegem is a superstar. Receiving a law degree from Tulane after completing her college education at UNC Chapel Hill, she has since been featured in the Wall Street Journal as well as being named one of the 100 Outstanding Women of Broward County in 2015. Stacy has drive and passion when it comes to achieving her goals and others’ goals as well!
“What led you into the business you are in now?”
Stacy is currently focusing on business development training for women attorneys. Practicing law in Manhattan, she transitioned out of the field and into coaching when she had her son. This abrupt transition from career woman to motherhood created an identity crisis for her. Stacy took a year off from working, desperately trying to figure out what to do next, landing in a technology company as the COO after understanding her unique talent for strategy and business development. She joined this tech company for six months, but realized she wanted to do work that was meaningful and rewarding. After getting certified in coaching, she launched her coaching practice in 2010. Since 2015, her coaching practice, The Happiness Agenda, has evolved into a conglomeration of business coaching with women entrepreneurs in sales and marketing helping them to overcome their fear and “get out of their own way”. She has also been able to help women attorneys elevate their own businesses.
“What is the best advice you have ever received that relates to building a business and becoming an entrepreneur?”
Something that we hear constantly, Stacy urged us to be true to ourselves! “Always go back to yourself and what is going to honor your own unique talents and priorities, values and desired feelings. People truly can smell inauthenticity!”
“What is something you had to overcome in order to be where you are today?”
Having a tendency to overcommit and become distracted by a multitude of things is something Stacy admitted she struggles with. Remember to prune, purge, and streamline! If you are out of focus, it is hard to advance any one thing. It is always going to be a challenge, but continuing on only helps you build your muscle more. She encouraged us to “be where you are”, focus on your next step and grow in what you are doing.
Here are Stacy’s 3 tips to get out of your own way!
First, let’s understand:
Even if you know how to do your craft, adding in a business makes it totally overwhelming! Get training on marketing, sales, and branding. Stacy always sees resistance, such as excuses, negative self-talk, or limited beliefs. We all think we are not experienced enough, not old enough, do not have enough and on and on. This is all FEAR! No matter how educated, successful or prepared you are, if fear has the upper hand, it is going to stop you from moving forward.
Start Before You Are Ready
How much time are you going to give yourself to do the research you need in order to feel prepared and say, “Okay I have to take a step”? You are going to try and look up how everyone else does it, but it’ll be never ending. Don’t wait until you have that feeling of being ready, because it is never going to come.
Clarity Comes from Taking Action
If you sit on your butt and wait for a knock on your front door, that day is never going to come! For example, if you don’t know what your specialization should be, go out and find a clients you think you may enjoy working with and see how it goes. You never want to stay where you are, waiting for the clarity to come.
Don’t forget, the action you take could show you that you never want to pursue that action again, and that in itself is still useful. Action will always create clarity.
Get Scheduled to Get It Done
Want to make sure it gets done? The fear and resistance keeps you from doing just that. There is stress and anxiety coupling that when you know you are keeping yourself from doing the task that needs to be done. Open up your calendar and save space in your life for that task to get accomplished.
Stacy posed this: If you wouldn’t stand me up, why would you stand yourself up? If you think it is important to honor your commitment to me, then it’s equally important to honor your commitment to you.
“What do you want to make sure our listeners get from your message today?”
Stay in your own lane. Don’t look at what others are doing and worry if you are behind, or haven’t gotten far enough along yet. Stay focused – you’ve got this! The people who do the work are the ones who get themselves to the next level. Do the work and reap the rewards.
Here is Stacy’s final parting piece of advice:
Don’t let your fear get in the way of you taking action. The world truly does need the gift that you have. By holding back, you are depriving the people who most need you from accessing you. Your job is to make yourself available and put yourself out there.
